Wigan target immediate return

England - Premier League

Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan is determined to see his side mount a strong challenge for a quickfire return to the Premier League.

The Latics' relegation was confirmed on Tuesday evening when they lost 4-1 at Arsenal, with Whelan now hoping to keep manager Roberto Martinez at the club to oversee a promotion challenge next season. Whelan told talkSPORT: "We've got one ambition now and that is to come straight back up next season. "We will fight next year and we'll look to come back within that first season - it's so important." Meanwhile, Martinez continues to be heavily linked with the soon to be vacant managerial position at Everton, with the Spaniard 6/4 with bet365 to succeed David Moyes in the Goodison Park hotseat. Wigan were last in the Championship in 2004/05, when they gained automatic promotion by finishing second and seven points behind Sunderland.
