Vitesse to get the better of Ajax again
Ajax are odds-on for their trip to Vitesse in the Dutch Cup but with the home side unbeaten in nine at home, Paul Robinson thinks they have to be opposed.
Vitesse are having a cracking season and they find themselves in fourth place in the Eredivisie and through to the quarter-finals of the Dutch Cup. After losing just one of their opening 15 in the league though, they have suffered three defeats in their last five. It should be noted however that they won on Sunday, 3-2, against tonight's opponents.
Fred Rutten's side trailed 0-2 in that game and it showed great character to score three times in the last 25 minutes to pick up a much needed victory. That will fill the players with confidence and it could leave a negative effect on Ajax.
At their home of the GelreDome, Vitesse have generally been thrashing their opposition. Those three league defeats I mentioned all came on the road as on home soil it's nine unbeaten, seven of which were wins, five of which were by a three goal margin or greater.
Ajax are having a pretty good campaign themselves; third in the league, just three points off top spot, through to the quarter finals of the cup, and after a couple of fine results against Manchester City in the Champions League, they managed to finish third in the group and qualify for the knockout phase of the Europa League.
Frank de Boer's men are without a win in two on their travels and while they won their three previous league games before that, prior to that spell, they drew four straight matches, conceding eight goals in the process. Also, not only did they lose to Vitesse on Sunday, they lost to them back in November, 0-2 at the Amsterdam Arena.
Ajax have the richer pedigree but on form it's a pretty even match up. So with Vitesse having home advantage, at around the 1.8 mark, I have to make Ajax my lay of the day.
