Saints opt to axe Adkins

England - Premier League

Southampton, 7/4 with bet365 to be relegated, have replaced Nigel Adkins with former Espanyol manager Mauricio Pochettino just days after earning a 2-2 draw at Chelsea.

The Saints are three points above the dropzone following their stirring fightback from two goals down at Stamford Bridge, but Adkins has still been shown the door, with the club citing long-term planning reasons. Saints executive chairman Nicola Cortese explained the decision, telling the club's official website: "This decision has been made with the long-term ambitions of Southampton in mind. "Whilst we acknowledge the contribution Nigel has made during the past two years, for the club to progress and achieve our long-term targets a change was needed." Pochettino is scheduled to begin his reign at St Mary's against Everton on Monday evening, with the Saints looking for revenge for a 3-1 defeat at Goodison Park earlier in the season. Gaston Ramirez gave the visitors an early lead on Merseyside, before Leon Osman and Nikica Jelavic (2) struck as the Toffees took the points.
