Rugby Union: Gatland earns McGeechan backing
Former head coach Sir Ian McGeechan has backed Warren Gatland to lead the British & Irish Lions to a series victory in Australia.
The Lions, who are 4/6 to win the series in Australia, lost 2-1 in South Africa in 2009 under the leadership of McGeechan, with Gatland having acted as an assistant to the Scotsman. Now Gatland, who has led Wales to three Six Nations' titles, two Grand Slams and a World Cup semi-final gets the chance to take on the top job and he has the full backing of McGeechan. He said: "He's a good coach, an outstanding coach and he works really well with players. He gets the best out of players but also he gives them clarity. "I think for the Lions that simplicity and that clarity about what they want to do as a group is the critical part of making the Lions function really well. He is very good at that."
