Rooneyless Red Devils to rule Reds
Andrew Hughes thinks United will prevail in Sunday's big game and help land a cross-sport multiple in the process.
Betfair now gives you the facility to mix and match your multiples across a huge range of sports and markets with the easy-to-use betslip and so each weekend I've been putting together a cross-sport treble with the aim of showing the way to maximise your profits.
Bet 1: Back Manchester United to beat Liverpool at 1.85
It's no longer the most important football rivalry in terms of deciding trophies, but outside Glasgow, it remains one of the bitterest. There have been eight red cards in the last fourteen meetings between these two old giants and the fall-out from these clashes can linger for weeks.
Hopefully, this latest renewal of the Liverpool-Manchester soap opera will be all about the football, with both teams in form. United have won eight of their last nine in the league and Liverpool have five wins in seven. This might suggest we're heading for a draw, but only two of the last twenty-four have ended in stalemate.
With both teams scoring and conceding freely in recent games, there could be plenty of goals, but even without Wayne Rooney, United should have the attacking edge. They've beaten Liverpool in seven of their last eight Old Trafford encounters and I'd expect Alex Ferguson to tactically outmanouvre his opposite number on Sunday.
Bet 2: Back Ospreys to beat Leicester Tigers at 1.88
This clash in Pool 2 of the Heineken Cup should be a thriller. Leicester have won their last four Aviva Premiership games and Ospreys had a similarly successful December. But the greater pressure is on the Welsh side on Sunday.
Ospreys are four points behind second-placed Toulouse and with the French side expected to beat Treviso, defeat to Leicester would see the Ospreys knocked out at the Pool stage for the third season in a row.
Still, Ospreys have shown they can mix it with their big-spending Pool 2 rivals. They beat Toulouse 17-6 last month and although they have a losing record overall against Leicester, they've only lost one of their last four against the Tigers. In a must-win game, the Welsh will have that extra edge of determination, even desperation to their game and that could be enough to see them over the line in a close affair.
Bet 3: Back Scott Waites to beat Tony O'Shea at 1.66
After last year's success for the unknown Christian Kist, this year's BDO World Championship finalists are familiar faces. It will be Tony O'Shea's third Lakeside final, whilst Scott Waites is making his first final appearance in six attempts.
The head to head record gives the edge to O'Shea, who has won four of their last five encounters, although notably, Waites emerged victorious from their only previous meeting in a final, at the Swedish Open in 2011.
And O'Shea's relatively poor record in finals makes him an unattractive betting prospect. He's won just two of his last nine final appearances. By contrast, his opponent has won fifteen of the twenty-five he's contested in his career, including eight of the last ten. Waites looked particularly ruthless in brushing aside Richie George in his semi-final and he's a solid bet to win the final.
