Raonic great value to beat Tsonga
It's fourth round day at the BNP Paribas Open and Sean Calvert fancies Milos Raonic to cause an upset today...
Yesterday's advice of backing Marinko Matosevic on the handicap against Sam Querrey proved to be sound, as a marathon match finally went the way of Querrey, but my handicap wager was comfortably covered by Matosevic.
Today's play at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden features some fascinating clashes between Rafa Nadal and Ernests Gulbis and also Roger Federer, who has been struggling with a back problem, taking on Stan Wawrinka.
There's also Juan Martin Del Potro facing Tommy Haas and Tomas Berdych versus Richard Gasquet, not to mention Andy Murray tackling surprise package Carlos Berlocq, who took down an injured (again) Kei Nishikori last night.
Murray will be playing Berlocq for the first time in his career and the Argentine is making his debut in the fourth round of a hard court Masters 1000. Charly is much more at home on the clay, but he can be a troublesome opponent on slow hard such as this.
The Scot hasn't really impressed so far this week and I would be tempted to back over 18.5 total games in this one as Murray may take a little time to work Berlocq out.
But a bet I prefer is for Milos Raonic to beat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga at a price of around 2.4.
This pair have met on just the one occasion and it was a memorable one, with Tsonga winning on grass at the Olympics 25-23 in the final set.
It would be easy to predict the over the total games mark in this one, but it's been set high at 24.5 games and for me there's more value in backing the Canadian at a better price as Tsonga has been pretty poor and doesn't enjoy these conditions.
The Frenchman struggled yesterday against a rusty Mardy Fish and he's never been past the fourth round stage here at Indian Wells.
Raonic has proved that he can be effective on the slower surfaces and although this one might take a while, I like his chances at odds-against today.
