Premier League on Betfair: Wigan relegated after defeat to Arsenal
Arsenal move back into the driving seat to finish in the top four this season with a win over Wigan tonight, a result that sends the FA Cup winners down to the Championship. Mike Norman explains...
Wigan have been relegated from the Premier League after suffering a 4-1 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium this evening.
With league results going against the Latics on the same weekend that they were lifting the FA Cup, only a win in north London would have realistically kept Roberto Martinez' men in with a chance of survival on the last day of the season.
But on a wet pitch with plenty of zip it was the Gunners that passed the ball superbly in the opening stages, and their early lead thanks to a Lucas Podolski header was fully deserved. The German was matched at 8.2 in the First Goalscorer market.
Wigan didn't get to grips with the conditions until around the half hour mark, but in the final 15 minutes of the half they started to play in the style and confidence that saw them beat Manchester City on Saturday. And right on the stroke of half time they were level when Shaun Maloney fired home a stunning free-kick.
The Half Time 1-1 Score was matched at 29.0, while the Half Time Draw was matched at 26.0 - Arsenal hit a low of 1.04 as the seconds ticked by.
Wigan were much the better team in the early stages of the second period but against the run of play Theo Walcott converted a fantastic Santi Cazorla cross to put Arsene Wenger's men back in front.
And just minutes later Arsenal wrapped the game up with two goals in three minutes from Podolski and Aaron Ramsey - leaving the Wigan players deflated as relegation to the Championship began to sink in.
Arsenal hit a high of 1.96 In-Play to win the game, while the 4-1 Correct Score was matched at 29.0.
Wigan were matched at a high of 5.0 during the season to be relegated.
The result leaves just the issue of who will record a Top Four Finish to be resolved on the final day of the Premier League season. Arsene Wenger's men are one point ahead of Tottenham currently and can be backed at 1.4, while Spurs are available to back at 3.4.
Arsenal travel to Newcastle on Sunday afternoon; Tottenham are at home to Sunderland.
In tonight's other Premier League fixture, managerless Manchester City beat Reading 0-2 at the Madejski Stadium thanks to goals from Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko.
Aguero was matched at 6.6 to score first, with the 0-2 Correct Score hitting a high of 11.0.
