Opta Big Match Stats: Wigan to swan ahead of Toon
Can Wigan plunge Newcastle into the bottom three with victory over Swansea? Christian Crowther consults the Opta stats to find out...
No side is currently on a longer winless run in the Barclays Premier League than Swansea City (7); level with Queens Park Rangers)
Ever since the Capital One Cup was held aloft at Wembley, Swansea's Premier League form has suffered. A hangover period may have been predictable following a first ever major domestic honour for the Welsh club, but only one win from the eight games since (and that the first one) is stretching it - despite the size of the party. Admittedly, the Swans have encountered four of the top five sides during that run but, by their early season standards, performance levels have significantly decreased. Wigan on the other hand have picked up four of the last six available points, giving their fans the scent of salvation yet again, and will be turbocharged to reverse the 2-1 scoreline at the Liberty Stadium.
Best Bet: Back Wigan to win @ 1.85
Five of Wigan's last seven Premier League home games have gone over 3.5 goals
While Wigan fans are put through the mill season after season, they certainly can't complain of a lack of goalmouth action - even if too much of that arrives at the wrong end. After a miniature drought, the Latics have now racked up five goals in just two games and have only failed to find the back of the opposition net once in their last seven Premier League games at the DW Stadium. While Swansea have not been firing on all cylinders of late, their last away game against a team in the bottom six saw them register twice at Norwich. The reverse fixture produced three goals within four minutes in October.
Recommended Bet: Back Over 2.5 goals @ 1.98
Norwich are the only away team to fail to score away at Wigan so far this season
Stats such as the above tell us exactly to why Wigan find themselves staring over the all too familiar Premier League precipice with just a handful of games remaining. Winning starts from the back, as all good pundits and managers alike agree. Roberto Martinez's sides, however, tend to go for the 'we'll score more goals than you' approach, which was beautifully demonstrated again at The Hawthorns in that 3-2 thriller on Saturday. If they are to win, the hosts will no doubt still give the travelling support a goal to cheer at some point. The reverse fixture produced a 2-1 scoreline and, given Wigan have notched twice in four of their last six home league games, a double may just be enough again.
Recommended Bet: Back Wigan to beat Norwich 2-1 @ 9.6
