Opta Big Match Stats: Another Suarez and Bale show
Christian Crowther shares his thoughts on Liverpool's big clash with Tottenham, using Opta's knowledge to help pick out some bets...
Gareth Bale is looking to become the first Tottenham player to score in six successive Premier League games
While the cupboard of acclaims to describe Tottenham's Welsh wonder has pretty much run bare, those who are backing him each week keep on getting their cake alright. Bale's Europa League strike in the week swelled his escalating tally to 11 goals in his last nine games for club and country and there does not seem a defence capable of keeping him at bay. Of course, the winger/new number ten notched in the reverse fixture against Liverpool at White Hart Lane and is bound to be the biggest threat to Pepe Reina's goal once again. Incidentally, Bale is the first Welsh player to score 16 goals in a single Premier League season.
Recommended Bet: Back Gareth Bale to score @ 2.7
Luis Suarez is only the third Liverpool player to score 20-plus goals in a Premier League season (after Robbie Fowler and Fernando Torres)
Possibly Bale's biggest rival for the PFA player of the year - especially if Robin van Persie continues his uncharacteristic scoring hiatus - is Liverpool's Uruguayan forward, who is producing his own unbelievable feats in front of goal this season. Suarez took himself two clear of RVP in the Premier League goalscoring charts with a second hat-trick in a red shirt this season at Wigan last Saturday. There have been times when Suarez has carried Liverpool this season, though now he is even more dangerous as he feeds off a team playing with real confidence. Even more scarily for opposing defences is the fact that new signing Philippe Coutinho already looks to have a great understanding with Suarez.
Recommended Bet: Back Luis Suarez to score @ 2.3
Liverpool's total of 53 goals from 28 games is their second best at this stage of a PL season (after 56 in 1995/96)
Brendan Rodgers has not required much prompting to remind media types that his Liverpool team are very much a work in progress this season. Thankfully for their fans, after a pretty sluggish autumn, the new year has given way to this much discussed progress. Liverpool have found a groove in the Premier League of late and their scoring statistics back that up. From their last six league wins - although not consecutive - the Reds have actually registered 24 goals and conceded precisely none, the last of which coming in a 4-0 drilling of Wigan. Although the Suarez factor has to be considered, goals are actually starting to come from a variety of other sources. Five other players have notched in the last two league games alone for Rodgers' side.
Recommended Bet: Back Liverpool to score two goals or more @ 1.92
