McCarthy handed Ipswich role

England - The Championship

Ipswich Town have named the former Republic of Ireland manager Mick McCarthy as their new boss.

The Championship strugglers have turned to the 53-year-old as they attempt to move off the foot of the table. McCarthy, who has also managed Millwall and Sunderland, has been without a club since being axed by Wolves in February and replaces Paul Jewell in the Portman Road hot-seat. He will be assisted by his former number two at Wolves, Terry Connor, who succeeded him as manager at Molineux. "I'm obviously delighted to have been given the job as Ipswich Town manager and I'm looking forward to the challenge ahead," said McCarthy. McCarthy's first game as Town boss will be Saturday's match at Birmingham City. Ipswich are 3/1 with bet365 to win the game and are 6/5 to be relegated this season.
