Martinez heads out of Wigan

England - Premier League

Manager Roberto Martinez has decided to take up a new challenge by ending his four-year reign with relegated Wigan Athletic.

The 39-year-old Spaniard led the Latics to FA Cup glory this season, but his side were unable to pull off another escape from relegation from the top-flight, with Wigan 12/1 with bet365 to win the Championship title next term. Latics chairman Dave Whelan told BBC Sport: "He wanted permission to move so I've given him that. "He feels he's not the man to lead us back into the Premier League. I've got to accept what he feels." Martinez has been strongly linked with the vacant managerial post at Everton, with the Toffees on the lookout for a new boss following David Moyes' move to Manchester United. Whelan, meanwhile, hopes to have a new manager in place in the next couple of weeks to be able to start planning for life in the Championship next season.
