League Two: Bees buzzing for Dutch Master

19Jan 2013

Had you placed £10 level stakes on Ian Lamont's selections last weekend, you would have won £110.80. He hopes Barnet can keep that run going.

Barnet 2.9 Fleetwood 2.3 Draw 3.4

Some big prices continue to be available on lowly placed sides, especially considering last weekend four of the bottom five clubs won and the other drew. Over six games, Barnet are third in the form table with 13 points and so are the bet of the week at 2.9 against Fleetwood. It is their best spell of the season, say Opta. Edgar Davids even says he has his struggling side playing, at times, how he wants them to. The manner of performances are often seen as a luxury compared to results for teams near the bottom. The only side the Bees have lost to in those six games are fellow strugglers Aldershot, which shows the tenacity at the bottom. They have three clean sheets and have scored 10 goals.  Fleetwood have jettisoned their good form going into the turn of the year and have lost the last two. It should pay to oppose them again.

York 2.16 Aldershot 3.65 Draw 3.45

Keiron Cadogan continues to impress for Aldershot. He signed a new deal this week having created others than the two chances they managed to convert against Accrington. The Hampshire club's relegation fight has had a shot in the arm with three wins and a draw in five added to by a fine FA Cup win over Rotherham. They have a good recent away record, losing just one in seven away, emphasise Opta and so the price has to tempt. However, while York's form is average WLDWLD they are capable of taking points. If he gets international clearance, striker Ben Everson will want to make his mark. The Shots cannot afford to relax, but look a confident enough unit now to take at least a point, which makes the hosts a short price. Lay.

Accrington 2.28  AFC Wimbledon 3.3 Draw 3.45

The clash at the Fraser Eagle Stadium boils down to a home side out of form and visitors showing some - and an old striker formerly of the Premiership who could well be shown up by a star of the future. James Beattie had just the one touch of note, a header wide, as Accrington failed to make the most of him - or register an effort on target - in losing at Aldershot last weekend. Boss Leam Richardson believes Beattie's best is yet to come after he extended his deal until the end of the season, but they need to get the ball to him. Paul McCallum, meanwhile, has got over being sent off on his Dons debut on loan from West Ham to register four goals in as many games since, including a double last weekend in the 2-2 draw with Wycombe, which AFC Wimbledon should have won. Accrington have won once in 10 games. Their visitors have fared little better, but they have two wins and a draw from three in 2013 and represent value for the victory as the teams at the bottom continue to climb.

Southend 1.8 Plymouth 4.8 Draw 3.7

After last weekend's first win for John Sheridon, there's a big price about a second. This is the week's longshot but Southend must be exhausted by now after their FA Cup replay. Their promotion bid is likewise looking fatigued and keeper Paul Smith was man of the match against Brentford, so Argyle will have to get past him. But the hosts are simply too short considering they have not scored a goal in three league games, note Opta. Plymouth still need a striker, but midfielder Conor Hourihane has two in three league games. Expect a tight game and Plymouth are worth the gamble.

League Two winner

Having layed Rotherham pre-season at 4.4 I went "green" backing them back at 11.0 within weeks. I have also recommended Torquay 25.0 and Port Vale 8.0 along the way. Vale are top fort the second time, giving hedge chances at twice your stake at 2.9. They are now joint favourites with Gillingham. So go "green" overall and now also add Exeter at 40.0. This is a back to lay at least, but Exeter were backed at 55.0 even after climbing to third. That seems huge, but their poor home of just four wins is built in. They have the division's best away record and so the recommendation to back them is based on the assumption that last weekend's home win over Southend can be a springboard. In the past three seasons, only Chesterfield led the division at the turn of the year and then won the title. Swindon and Notts County came from further back.
