Latics play down experience

20Apr 2013

England - Premier League

Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez has played down the impact of past escapes from the drop, as his side battle again to preserve their Premier League status.

The Latics have enjoyed a season to remember by reaching a first-ever FA Cup final, but Martinez has warned that that will count for little if Wigan are relegated, with bet365 having them at 11/8 to go down. With his side still three points adrift of safety ahead of a trip to West Ham on Saturday, Martinez warned: "We have been in this position before and know what to expect, but that doesn't make it easier. "It is going to be a really tough end to the season and it is the hardest battle we have had for a few years." Last season, Wigan eventually escaped the drop by seven points after an amazing run of seven wins in their last nine games.
