Kompany faces race against time

Vincent Kompany is facing a race against time to be ready for Manchester City's visit to Newcastle United on Saturday after tweaking a groin muscle in the derby defeat to  Manchester United.

The Belgian had to be substituted in the first half of the 3-2 loss and, although a scan showed he did not suffer a serious tear, boss Roberto Mancini will wait until Friday  before deciding whether to risk his captain. Manchester City, 2/1 with bet365 to retain their Premier League title this season, can be backed at 4/6 to win at St James' Park. Kolo Toure may get the nod ahead of Joleon Lescott should Kompany fail to make the cut, while City also have a doubt over Samir Nasri, who was blamed for Manchester United's third goal in the derby clash.
