Padraig Harrington is hoping a successful year will cement his claims for a Ryder Cup place in 2014.

The Irishman begins his PGA Tour season at the Waste Management Phoenix Open in Arizona, which he is 45/1 with bet365 to win outright. Harrington is just inside the top 50 in the world rankings and is targeting a spot in Europe's Ryder Cup squad next year, which will be captained by fellow Dubliner Paul McGinley. "I've known him for a long time and it's going to be fantastic having him as captain, but it would be fantastic to be in the Ryder Cup no matter who was captaining the team," said the three-time major winner. "Professional golf is one of the most selfish games that you can play. It's an individual sport and it's all about managing ourselves, but Paul McGinley loves teams. "He's probably sacrificed the last three years of his playing career and the next 18 months for the Ryder Cup. It's been all about the team for him."
