Federer to quieten confident Tomic
The third round of the Australian Open continues tonight and Sean Calvert expect a certain Swiss maestro to overcome the challenge of the in-form Bernard Tomic..
It was one winner from my two bets on Thursday night at the 2013 Australian Open.
Jie Zheng backers can count themselves very unfortunate, as the Chinese player served for the match against Julia Goerges but was broken and in a reverse of her match with Sam Stoser, Zheng went on to lose 7-5 in the decider.
But there was better news from the men's side as Nico Almagro covered his minus 4.5 game handicap mark against Jerzy Janowicz in a straight sets victory.
Day six in Melbourne sees surely the most eagerly awaited matches of the season so far as the self-admiring Aussie with one ATP 250 title to his name takes on arguably the greatest player of all time.
Yes, it's Bernard Tomic vs Roger Federer at around 8am UK time on Saturday morning and it's one I'm looking forward to immensely.
One of the many things that Federer excels at is putting young upstarts in their place and make no mistake, he'll have heard all the trash talking that Tomic has done - and it's a lot.
The layers aren't buying it though and have Federer as a 1.14 favourite, despite Tomic's claims that 'it's the perfect time to play him'.
The Swiss has a 3-0 head-to-head over Bernie and dropped just one set in those matches and that was in Davis Cup just after the 2011 US Open.
Bernie's confidence appears to have been gleaned from an exhibition win over Novak Djokovic and while that's all well and good, I suspect that it will have drained from him by the end of set two in this one.
There could be some close sets in this, as Tomic has improved in certain areas, but I'll be on the 1.85 about a straight sets win to the Swiss.
Andy Murray is also in action tonight - probably at around 3 or 4 am UK time and he takes on Ricardas Berankis, whose game the Scot knows well from hitting with him and this should also be a straight sets win if Murray continues the way he's started this
tournament.
After the burglary of the Zheng match last night, I'm siding with the in-form Elena Vesnina to continue her excellent start to the season by taking down Italian Roberta Vinci on Margaret Court Arena.
Vesnina stormed to the Hobart title last week for the loss of just a single set and while her confidence is as high as it is at the moment it's worth sticking with the Russian against an opponent she's had success against in the past.
Three of the four previous meetings have gone the way of Vesnina, including on hard courts in Auckland a year ago and with form and conditions in her favour I think it's worth taking the 1.84 about a similar result again tonight.
