Spain go into this tournament on the verge of making history. It wasn't long ago that they were being spoken of as one of the biggest under achievers in world football. But winning the 2008 European Championships followed by the 2010 World Cup has led to this becoming a golden era for Spanish football. Winning the 2012 European Championships would make them the first ever European side to win three tournaments on the spin.

Spain defeated Serbia last night in a pre-tournament friendly but their team was minus many key players due to the Copa del Rey final. Spain are grouped in with Italy, Ireland and Croatia and so their group is not an easy one. Although it has to be said that there are no easy groups at the European Championships. It is easy to see why Spain are not just the favourites for this group but the entire tournament.

They are the international version of Barcelona but as we have seen in the Champions League this season, if luck does not favour you then you will be eliminated. It takes a combination of a good team and luck to win a tournament and Spain's luck may just finally run out. They have a star studded squad with many of them coming from the two giants of Real Madrid and Barcelona.
