The first semi-final is played out this evening between Spain and Portugal in Donetsk. Most people are tipping a Spain victory but one would be foolish to blindly dismiss Portugal with the likes of Ronaldo and Nani in their team. Spain came through what was a tough group with the likes of Italy, Croatia and the Republic of Ireland. While the Irish failed to perform, that accusation certainly couldn't be levelled at Italy or Croatia.

It is no coincidence that the semi-finalists have come from the two toughest groups which are namely groups B and C. Spain drew their opening game with Italy 1-1 and then proceeded to beat Ireland 4-0 and Croatia 1-0 to top Group C with 7pts. Portugal came second in Group B behind Germany who they lost 1-0 to in their opening game.

An opening loss in the group always places that team under pressure but Portugal responded magnificently. They then beat Denmark in a thrilling match 3-2 and followed that with another thrilling 2-1 victory over The Netherlands who were one of the pre-tournament favourites. It has been noted many times that Spain will make history in this tournament should they win it but having Portugal and the winner of Germany or Italy standing in their way is going to be tough even for Spain.
