Darts: MVG targets Taylor showdown

1Jan 2013

Michael van Gerwen, 10/11 with bet365 to be crowned champion, will go head-to-head with Phil Taylor in the final of the PDC World Darts Championship on New Year's Day.

Van Gerwen reached his first world final with a 6-4 win over James Wade and the young Dutchman is confident ahead of the biggest night of his sporting life. He said: "Phil is still the greatest player in the world because he's the 15-time world champion, but I'm playing very well at the moment." Taylor, who won a stormy semi-final against Raymond van Barneveld 6-4, is wary of the threat of Van Gerwen, who won the World Grand Prix in September. He added: "Michael's playing some of the best darts I've ever seen from anybody in my career. At the minute he's phenomenal and it's going to take every ounce of energy and concentration to beat him."
