Chelsea Manager: Blues should say Jupp to Heynckes
Christian Crowther reviews Chelsea's leadership options for the next campaign and concludes that coaxing Jupp Heynckes out of retirement would be the best option...
What is it with these pensioner types at the moment? Rather than making the most of free public transport or the Mediterranean cruise scene, they are teaching the rest of Europe how to manage a football team.
Of course, I am referring to the achievements this week of Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, in winning a 13th Premier League crown, and Jupp Heynckes steering his brilliant Bayern Munich side to within a whisker of consecutive Champions League finals.
When asked about his as yet unspecified date for retirement, Fergie was typically evasive, but according to club director Sir Bobby Charlton, the 71-year-old Scot is already planning for next season.
Well, that would appear to rule Man United's most successful ever manager out of the running for the soon-to-be-vacant Chelsea post then.
To most Chelsea fans' relief, Rafa Benitez's "interim" term at Stamford Bridge is almost up.
And despite the fact the Londoners are the 2.46 favourites to land the Europa League trophy, not many of the blue persuasion will look back at the Spaniard's tenure with great affection, even if he does bring Chelsea further European success.
This is reflected by the 'Benitez to Go' market, where the unpopular boss' chances of starting next season at the Bridge are rated at 34.0 currently.
Most reports on Roman Abramovich's quest for a replacement have been dominated by the same names: Jose Mourinho, Atletico Madrid's Diego Simeone and Malaga's Manuel Pellegrini.
However stellar some of these might appear on paper though, the one man that Abramovich should be flashing his ridiculously large chequebook at is Bayern's retirement-bound 67-year-old boss.
In his third stint as manager at Bayern Munich, the three-time Bundesliga-topping coach and one-time winner of the Champions League with Real Madrid has assembled one of the great European sides of recent decades.
By rights, he should already have added a fifth European Cup to Bayern's trophy cabinet against Chelsea last season, only to be undone by penalties in the final.
Rather than give up on his dream though, in his swansong season at Bayern, he now looks set to rectify that after reducing Barcelona to ashes at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday night.
Chelsea should be down on their knees begging him to reconsider his retirement.
