Betting exchange and online casino operator Betfair and top-flight German professional soccer team Bayer Leverkusen have agreed by mutual consent to cancel the two- year sponsorship deal signed in June.

The deal had contained an option for a third year and saw Betfair branding appear on advertising and pitch-side hoardings in and around the team’s 30,000-seat BayArena  while former player and manager Rudi Voller, who serves as Sporting Director for Bayer Leverkusen, acted as a brand ambassador for the operator.

Both parties have declined to disclose any particulars surrounding the cancellation but the original deal was signed just days before the German Bundestag signed  legislation into law that imposed a five percent tax on all sportsbetting stakes.
