Against All Odds: Canaries to punt a dent in Wigan's survival plans
Norwich travel to Wigan in the Premier League this afternoon and while they haven't been given much hope by the Betfair markets, Paul Robinson thinks they could spring a surprise.
To the naked eye, Wigan have begun their end of season revival; four wins in five and just two defeats in their last eight. Two of those victories came in the FA Cup though, and in the league, while they have picked up six points from a possible nine recently, they still don't have me convinced.
Roberto Martinez's men ended a spell of half a dozen matches without victory by beating Reading 3-0 at the Madejski but The Royals played terribly that day and are destined to go down themselves. They then went on to lose 4-0 at home to Liverpool but bounced back last time out by overcoming Newcastle 2-1 at the DW. It took an injury time winner from Arouna Koné to seal all three points that day and they were fortunate to do so as not only did The Geordies deserve a point, Callum McManaman should have seen red for The Latics in the first half.
Norwich are seven points clear of Wigan who occupy the final remaining relegation place. They have played a game more though so if they get beat today, then the gap will be reduced to four points which won't sit easy with Chris Hughton. The former Newcastle boss has steadied the ship in 2013 after his side finished the year with four straight defeats.
Since that spell, The Canaries have lost just two of nine in the league and while they may have only won one of those matches, they were unlucky not to win their last two - missing a late penalty to defeat Southampton and then seeing their goalkeeper sent off when leading at Sunderland. That latter incident means that Norwich will have to field their third choice keeper this afternoon, but Lee Camp is vastly experienced and has been a regular for Nottingham Forest for the last few seasons.
Wigan have won just one of their previous eight league matches at the DW Stadium and Norwich have shown that they are very tough to beat. That's why, with the home side trading as low as 1.97 I have to make them my lay of the day.
